The two teams had previously met in the group stage in a goalless draw, but the final was a complete contrast, filled with goals and exciting action from start to finish, with Colombia taking the lead three times, only for Brazil to hit back each time.
Linda Caicedo put Colombia ahead in the 25th minute with a low right-footed shot that beat Brazil goalkeeper Lorena. Brazil’s hopes were revived in first-half injury time, thanks to a penalty awarded by Jorelyn Carabali to Gio. Angelina easily converted the spot-kick to level the score.

When Mayra Ramirez put Colombia ahead in the 88th minute, it looked like Brazil’s hopes were over. However, Marta, who had come on just minutes earlier, scored a spectacular long-range goal in the 96th minute to level the score at 3-3 and send the match into extra time.
Marta then gave Brazil their first lead of the match in the 105th minute, converting a cross from Angelina Jolie. However, there was another surprise late in the match when Leicy Santos scored a beautiful free-kick, ensuring the match would be decided by a penalty shootout.
